Thank you for this video. Would love to see taking photos in misty conditions.
There is a hidden trick function inside the camera where many people don't know ;that is : Press the Marco Button and press the front ring at the same time, which the snap distance could be swiftly changed by rotating the front ring while your camera is in the position of snap mode. It is really helpful especially at the street photography shooting.Check it out.

Lukaz one of the best to explain and teach!
Thank you!! :)
Great vid, love there is still content being made for the ii
100% yes. many of us still have GR2
I’m loving all these looks in your older videos
Łukas is best acquisition of RICOH GR Photography. Very informative tutorial. Wielkie Dzięki ;)
Thanks!! :)
Thx for sharing. Best Snap Focus explanation I got so far... Would be nice to know whether you may have other specific GRII setting that may be useful
Love my GR II. No need to upgrde. Thx mate✔️
A brilliant explanation of using snap-focus in real-world situations especially in fading light and opening up the aperture.
Thanks!! :)
Your explanations were clear, and now I understand the function. Cheers!
Great tutorial, I liked the explanation of how to use at night, i.e about the smaller aperture and extra distance. I also liked the way you used snap with foreground blur through the shop window. This one video I think really explains why the GR series rock!! Snap focus is so simple but so empowering, but I can imagine purists disagring with me, may be. Just my opinion. Thanks for the video!! 📸😉👍🏽
Thank you! Glad you found it useful! :)
I've always been interested in the Ricoh GR series but these videos completely convinced me, so I bought myself a Ricoh GR II :)
That's great!! :)
Excellent video, thank you!
Hi Lukas, i really enjoy your videos, they are really educational, i wonder, is there any reason you have not switched to the GR 3?
I'm poor due to the COVID destroying my workshop business haha, so I can't justify the cost while my GR II is still kicking. :)
Hands down the most helpful (and gettable) tutorial on the Ricoh I’ve ever watched. (And trust me… I’ve watched my share. 😂) Thank you.
Hey nice explaining, thank you.
If i'm not gettin' It wrong, you can't setup two different distances for full snap and snap focus, right? You have to use the same.
Thanks again,
Cheers
Nice explanation. I've used snap quite a bit, but your video clarified some things about focus distance and amount of light. Thanks for sharing!
Out pleasure! :)
Just got my griii and new to the Ricoh world, thanks for the snap focus tutorial!
Nice video. But can you explain how you chose the ISO and shutter speed settings? Or you just let the camera decide those two?
Excellent video. I do have a question and I hope you reply. Does a camera feel like a durable piece of equipment or does it feel a bit cheap. I'm really considering purchasing one of these GR3's. Do you recommend a screen protector for the screen?
I feels very durable. I beleive the interior is made of magnesium alloy, which is a very tough and light material also used in pro SLRs. It's not weather-sealed though as far I'm aware. But it certainly does not feel cheap. I think a screen protector is a good idea since you'll often keep it in your pocket. I don't use one and over the years on my GR II I have gotten some scuffs and blemishes on the screen, but nothing major. I believe the GR III uses tougher gorilla glass like many smartphones do, since it's also a tough screen.
Thanks for really great videos. Always great to see your tutorials🙂
Thank you for sharing this. I find especially inspiring connecting snap focus with light conditions. I've never thought about this feature in this way. And perhaps that's why I am terrible in using it :-) Time to practice taking into consideration your tips.
It all ties together in photography!! :)
I believe Snap Focus can also help to extend your battery, at least in my experience from using the GR III and GR ii
That makes sense! The focus motor is working much less with snap focus.
Ahh this was such a great video! Thank you! I use snap focus but have been inefficient with it. Thanks again!!
Is the Ricoh GR ii image quality very good?
Perfect explanation…again, another informative video!!
Thanks for this. Is there a way to have the DOF focus bar on the screen the whole time - say if you are in Program Mode?
So well explained, thanks for this.
Thank you for this video. Great explanations !
i bought my first ricoh (grii) and this helps me a lot, as Im new in the foto business :=) thanks for doing this and hopefully there are more to come ;) cheers from berlin!
I already said that, but his explanations are the best 🙌🏼
Hi, thanks 🙏 ordered the GR3 and excited to pickup it next week.
Awesome!! :)
Super helpful! Thank you!
Thank you for this perfect explanation. I am a novice & your explanations are easy to understand.
Glad to hear that!! :)
Brilliant! I really enjoyed this and all your videos
I like your videos and way of teaching. Thank you!
Glad you like them!
Thank you!! :)
Love my Ricoh, glad im back into this camera system.
Same like Ricoh simple and easy ,Good Video,Love my GR 3
Thanks! have been wondering about this feature before i buy.
Thank you, great explanation.
Glad you found it useful! :)
Now that the new GR111x is out, what are the main points of comparison it to the GR111, mainly 28mm vs 40mm for street shots and any new features?
Hi ! Thank you for this video! Could you do the exact same thing about the flash in the GRII?🙏
How precise are these distance scales? I have a few fuji cameras and I don't trust the scale at all.
I’m still a little confused between the difference of snap and full press snap. When you were in snap focus, were you still half pressing the shutter button?. It still seemed very quick
When you turn on snap focus, it just works no matter how you press the shutter button. Half-pressing does nothing (though it might lock exposure, I'm not sure). This is why I like to have it on. It takes away the 'pressure' of using full-press snap. Altough I love how 'available' full-press snap is, especially when I need it all of a sudden!
I only use snap focus with the full press snap option. That way i have both af and snap available.
On my other cameras, i sometimes use zone focusing : manual focusing set on a distance and I have the same results.
Totally makes sense! I hope I didn't sounds like a I discourage full-press snap. I think it's great! But I do like to just have it on sometimes too. It's much more like a true zone focus system, which I also often use and so I am quite accustomed to it.
What shutter speed and iso were you using? It looked like you weren’t trying to steady the camera that much like you were at 1/260 or more but given it was night I assume you would need to drop lower.
I was at 1/250 and auto ISO with a max of 3200. It was night, but the streets are pretty well lit.
thanks Lukas! I have a quick question, did you shoot those photos with auto ISO? and what's the maximum ISO you recommend with GR?
Yes I did! My recommended max on the GR II is 3200 and on the GR III I would recommend 6400. I have only tried the GR III a few times and a friend of mine shoots with it, but the results on 6400 ISO are great on the GR III!
Thanks. I've read about "Full Press Snap Focus" and I did not realize that it's always available [if configured to "ON" in settings].
Would you say the full snap press is a bit slower than your snap focus customization settings? Also, based on your settings, you still have to press the shutter button fully or half press to take photo. Thank you so much.
When snap focus is enable, then half-pressing the shutter does nothing (though it might lock exposure, not sure) and a full press takes the photo. The difference is that you don't have to mash the button down quickly, as you do in full-press snap. I think both modes have their place. I use both, depending on the situation: full-press snap when I'm caught off-guard, and regular snap when I'm anticipating the shot more.
@@EYExplore thank you so much. Greatly appreciated.
Is it possible to deactivate focus from shutter button and assign to AEL/AFL button for back button focusing?
Yes! Though I don't us this much myself as I find it not quite ergonomic for me on the small camera. On large cameras I used BBF all the time.
Does snap focus work in manual focus mode?
Is GRii still available and could I program snap focus for day time shooting and night mode with low light conditions?
Hi. Thank you for your videos. Am learning a lot. I have a question. Any tips on how to learn to estimate distance? I want to learn snap focus but I can’t seem to estimate what is 1, 2, 3, 5 meters.
Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! Nice one! I wonder if it's possible to get multiple shots in manual snap mode (for example, by long pressing the shutter release button). I don't have the Ricoh GR camera, so I am not able to test it myself. I also wasn't able yet to find the answer to my question in the net. Would be great to find out! Cheers!
Very helpful, thank you.
Nice, love it... Thanks
Very good tutorial. Would love to see one on using the GR in low light / dusk / night conditions
That's a good idea! :)
Hi... thank you for this video! Actually, that was my question on the previous one... thank you!
... and, one more - At 1:05 we see Focus Pinpoint AF ... are you using that option in this video?... I mean - it can stay on that?
If you set like this video, you will lose the default fn1 functionality. But actually you can keep that, and at the same time change snap focus distance by hold pressing the micro focus button and scroll the front wheel.
I always use pinpoint AF when I am not using snap focus. I like the precision!
I was looking for a video on snap focus. I am having problem with it. F/8, S/200, ISO/1600 full press snap focus mode @ 1m distance. Still having blurred image. What could be the reason?
At that distance the DOF is very very shallow even on f/8, so you have to really nail the distance. That's in the case of focus blur, but if you mean motion blur, then you just have to increase the shutter speed. For moving subjects at that distance 1/200 is not really that fast.
@@EYExplore My subject wasn't moving fast. Subject distance was approximately 15ft. I guess DOF is the problem.
@@TheNowsher Well, if your snap focus distance is 1m at f/8, you get a zone that's from about .8m to 2.5m. 2.5m is equal to approx. 8 feet. So if the subject was 15 feet away, then they were totally out of your selected snap focus zone!
Lukaz, great Video again, and as always I learned a lot. One Q, do you know where to get the Firmware Update 3.0 ? I don´t find it at Ricoh`s GR Website!
There you go :) - www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/digital/gr2_s.html
@@RICOHGRPHOTOGRAPHY That was fast ! Thank you so much !
@@RICOHGRPHOTOGRAPHY Is it possible to update direct from 1.1 to 3.0 or will this cause problems?
Hi Lukaz thanks for this video I'm new to GR II, I've got a couple of questions for you, first what kind of metering do you normally use? Multi, Center or Spot? Second do you leave the full press option in the menu on or off? (I've already set fn1 and fn2 buttons for manual switch between snap and and). Keep it up! 💪🏻📸
I usually use Multi, and I leave the full press snap option always on. :)
@@LukaszPalkaPhoto thanks for your advice 🙂
@@Lorenzo_Melocchi no problem!! :)
Would you ever use snap focus set on infinity? why or why not? Thank you!
Sure! When shooting something far away, especially in condition where the camera is having trouble focusing.
Really good tutorial, could you do a video explaining the auto ISO Hi, Can’t really get it set on my GRII properly
Thanks! Actually, I cover that in this video: ruclips.net/video/FuvePJzaShw/видео.html
Great video. Love my GRiii. Previously had the GRii also. I only ever use full press snap. Please explain why you would not use full press snap all the time? I don't understand in what situation you would use snap focus instead of full press snap? Keep it up!
I thought I mentioned it, but basically, doing the full pres requires some concentration to make sure I don't half-press by accident. This is not a big deal, but if I KNOW I'm going to be using snap focus for some scene, I prefer to just have it on and not worry about it. It's just a matter of preference. There is really no big benefit.
@@EYExplore So if you are in the Snap Focus mode, and then press the shutter button halfway whats gonna happen ?
@@bilbo8338 If you are actually in snap focus mode then half pressing doesn't do anything (though depending on your settings I think it might lock the Auto Exposure).
Can you use the lcd screen on the GR ii to snap focus? Can you tap the screen to take a snap focus picture? Like on the GR iii
Hi Lukaz, you have great videos with great explanations and detail. I would like to explore a bit further this particular option which i find it very interesting. My question is can snap focus be used with auto ISO at minimum of 1/250 and be able to control just the aperture?. It doesn't work for me.. only in a different focus modes.
It should! That's exactly how I use it.
What camera was the video shot on?
Dang, that is so convenient. No waiting for the camera to try and focus, or anything like that.. wow, that's really freeing.
hi, I experience that snap focus is unsharp at 1 meter and also at 1,5 meter. I've tried it at different f-stops. Anyone who has this problem as well knows a tip? Anyway very helpful video !
Good video, thanks!
Don't know if answers still provided for this video. Have you tried different distances set on 1,2 and 3 customs settings dial and switch between them depending which DOF zone your subject is.
I haven't tried that, but I'm not really a fan of the custom settings dial. It's quite slow to use and find my way much faster and more intuitive.
Bra and thank you for your explanations on the use of SNAP. I did a test with my RICOH GR III x and I don't have the same settings as on your RICOH GR II.
When I am at a distance of 5 m I have an opening F/7.1 and not at F2.8 as you indicate. And I have an opening at F/16.
Do I have to set the ISO automatically or manually ? And if manually, which upper and lower limit supports the RICOH GR III x ?
Thank you in advance for the answers you will bring me.
I'm going to Japan soon and that would help me a lot !
Nicole Duranceau
Late answer but might explain to others. You need to be in aperture priority or manual mode and set your aperture manually. So you'd set it to F2.8 and you can set whichever distance you like with the snap focus. You can use either manual or automatic ISO. Iirc lower limit for the 3x is 100 and upper limit 102000? I don't have my cam in the hands now, but you can easily Google this information toi
I have the Ricoh 8.1 megapixel GR digital and find the af setting very quick.
Great, thanks
Bonjour,
Est ce que snap focus fonctionne avec le convertisseur 21mm
Great Video ! Thank you
When you set autoiso, maybe you get 6400 iso with larger grain
Thank you now I really want to buy a GR 2 OR GR III
So it is a visual hyperfocal distance tool?
It's like an instant zone focus with a few preset ranges.
Are you use A mode or M mode?
Most of the time A and when I need to, I use M as well.
These photos are better than any i've taken lol
why would you disable snap focus? Thank you!
Thanks for the video.
It is impossible for me to rename pre-set menus. Maybe it is not possible?
Anyone knows how to do it??
I’ve been so confused between this and the Fuji 100v and have not yet decided which to go for. Any thoughts?
I don’t like the fact that the GR doesn’t have viewfinder but the snap focus is very nice
I too had this same decision to make with the X100F and GR II a few years ago. I chose the GR and I think I made the right choice. I wanted a camera that's very small and portable. While the X100 is pretty small, it's still much bigger than a GR. The GR has probably the best 'performance-to-size ratio' of any camera. :)
@@LukaszPalkaPhoto I yet have to decide. Note having a viewfinder is stopping me at this point of time. The f2 vs f2.8 isn’t a big deal for me.
Good tutorial, tks
How do you set the program buttons?
In the custom settings menu.
Hi Lucas, I just got hold of a GRiii because I love street photography and Ive heard great things about snap focus which Ive never had before. Now I find there also full press focus and Im confused. Would you mind explaining the differences please. Love your shots and I really wish I lived in Tokyo when I could spend my life in Shinjuku and walk in the steps of Daido Moriyama.
Actually I explain this in this video at about 1:40. Full-press snap is just about how you access snap focus. It does the same thing as regular snap focus. It's just a shortcut. :)
very nice thank you
Great Videos as usual ! thanks a lot Lukasz, I have learned a great deal thanks to your eyexplore videos and Rocih ones !
I had a question though, what is the difference between Zone focusing and Snap mode ? isn't it pretty much the same ?
Essentially, Snap focus is zone focusing. It's the same thing. The difference is how you interact with the camera as a tool. When I use my SLR with a manual lens, I turn the focus ring to set the zone. The GR is very small and has no focus ring, so you control the zone by selecting it in the camera. I recently figured out that if you hold down the Macro button on the rear of the camera, you can select your snap distance (i.e. your 'zone') by turning the top command dial. I had the camera for nearly 4 years before I figured this out!! :)
first like!
How do you set shutter speed to 400 on M mode with snap focus on? Thanks!
I'm not sure what you mean. You just set it to 400. On M you can set the shutter speed however you like by using the command dial on the top-rear of the camera. You can do it whether snap focus is on or off.
@@EYExplore I figured it out, after I upgraded the firmware I reset all settings to default and then it allowed me to control camera on all modes unlike before for some reason. Not sure what caused it but I'm good now. Thanks for reply.
@@DarkstarDarth Glad you figured it out! :)
Black shirt helps your beard look incredibly epic.
:)
Can you set snap focus to 5 metres and then full press snap to 1 metre?
There is only one distance setting that applies to both kinds of snap focus.
could you please explain the full press snap more? thanks
Hmm, can you let me know what you want to know? There is not much more to explain. It focus exactly the same as regular snap focus, the only difference is how you access it, which I do explain in the video.
@@EYExplore correct me If I'm wrong, i watched the video again. So from what my understanding is that full press snap is when you press halfway first then press the shutter, the camera will use autofocus. But for snap focus, one press of the shutter all the way and it will focus on a certain distance. I'm really sorry, Im new to gr and I came from fuji.
@@tl2960 That is EXACTLY correct! You got it! :)
@@EYExplore finally, thank you so much! looking forward to more gr videos
Lukas has more emotional attachment to his beard than I do for my mamiya 7.
Haha, not really! Actually, I'm ready to shave it off. Beards are a pain in the butt!! :)
Any reason you guys used the GRII to make this video and not the GRIII? Seems odd...
I'm a slow adopter when it comes to cameras. My other camera is an 8 year old SLR. I think Ricoh also likes to have some people who use GR3 and some who use GR2 because there are still tons of people out there using GR2 and they want to learn about their camera. The feature sets are similar but not exactly the same in both cameras, so it makes sense to make tutorials for both. :)
Excellent explanation. Worth noting that touching the screen to take the photo will help avoid additional camera shake
If you want REAL speed in street photography, its FULL PRESS SNAP all the way. Just set the distance and snap.
No need for unnecessary and unproductive complications (a hallmark of Japanese working culture).
Hello, I did not get what "full press snap."
The camera will automatically take a picture at a set focal distance when you fully press the shutter button. You can set it to 1m, 2m 5m - this means you don't have to wait for the autofocus.
Like using a film camera 👺👍🏽
Dziękuję, Lukasz
